10 Countries with the Longest Fasting Duration in the World, Nearly 18 Hours

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Muslims around the world welcome the holy month of Ramadan which falls on Monday, March 11 or Tuesday, March 12, depending on the sighting of the new moon in each country. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are required to fast, in addition to other obligatory worship.

In general, fasting from dawn to dusk will last between 12 and 17 hours, depending on where you are in the world. However, have you ever asked why Ramadan starts on a different date every year?

Ramadan starts 10 to 12 days earlier than the Gregorian calendar because it uses the Islamic lunar calendar.

Fasting Times in Various Parts of the World

Quote Al Jazeera on Tuesday, (12/3/2024), Muslims living in the southernmost countries such as Chile or New Zealand will fast for around 12 hours, while those living in the northernmost countries such as Iceland or Greenland will fast for more than 17 hours.

For Muslims living in the Northern Hemisphere, the duration of fasting will be slightly shorter this year and will continue to decrease until 2031, when Ramadan coincides with the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. After that, the duration of the fast will increase until the summer solstice or the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

In contrast, for Muslims living south of the equator, the situation will be reversed.

In northernmost cities such as Longyearbyen in Norway, where the sun does not set from April 20 to August 22, Muslims are permitted to fast following the time in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, or a nearby Muslim country.
