Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – There are nearly 200 historical sites that have been destroyed or damaged as a result of Israeli air attacks in the Gaza region, Palestine since October 7 2023.
Launching from Al Jazeerathe facts about this were revealed after South Africa stated that Israel had committed many war crimes, including the destruction of a nation's cultural heritage in a lawsuit hearing at the International Court of Justice.
“Israel has damaged and destroyed many Palestinian centers of learning and culture, including libraries, religious sites and other historical places,” said South Africa, quoted Tuesday (30/1/2024).
Meanwhile, the Gaza Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities also urged the world and organizations working in the fields of education, science and culture, UNESCO, to act on the “cultural genocide” carried out by Israel.
“The world and UNESCO must take action against crimes targeting archaeological sites to preserve this great civilizational and cultural heritage,” said Gaza's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Responding to this, UNESCO said that apart from humanity, protection of cultural heritage in all forms must be carried out. Therefore, he called on Israel to respect international law.
“In accordance with its mandate, UNESCO calls on all actors involved to strictly respect international law. Cultural property must not be targeted or used for military purposes because it is considered civilian infrastructure,” explained UNESCO in a statement.
The president of Heritage for Peace, Isber Sabrine, said that crimes affecting cultural heritage were part of the “collateral damage of genocide”.
“Libraries function as cultural repositories. Attacking libraries is an attack on cultural heritage. What is happening now is a war crime,” said Sabrine.
“Israel is trying to erase people's connection with their land. This is very clear and deliberate. Gaza's heritage is part of their people, history and relationship,” he added.
