Apple Threatened with a Fine of IDR 8 Trillion Due to Monopoly

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Apple faces a fine of 500 million euros or around Rp. 8.4 trillion. The reason is because the company's application store is said to be a business monopoly.

Apple Music is said to not provide other subscription methods outside the App Store. This matter is being investigated by the European Commission, quoted from The GuardianTuesday (20/2/2024).

In 2019, Spotify filed a complaint with the European Union regarding this dominance. The Swedish streaming company said Apple limited users' choice of subscriptions by not providing cheaper subscription options on the official Spotify website.

In addition, the giant from the United States (US) charges a 30% fee for all purchases. However, this only applies to platforms outside the Apple ecosystem, because Spotify says Apple Music does not pay the same fees as the company.

Regarding the additional costs, Apple defended itself and said it was reasonable. The company argued that it needed a lot of money to present a secure App Store and provide application access to many customers.

The FT report citing five sources said the European Commission called Apple's actions illegal. The company has also violated the rules enforced in the region regarding business competition.

Previously, Apple had repeatedly had to face the European Commission regarding its policies or the company's products. For example, opening access for regional customers to download applications outside the App Store due to Digital Market regulations.

Apple also released a USB-C type cable for iPhones sold in Europe. In 2022 the local commission implemented a rule that all electronic devices must use USB-C and this will take effect at the end of 2024.

In practice, this rule means that Apple has to change the device. As is known, the iPhone always uses the Lightning Port.

This reason also seems to mean that the latest iPhone 15 which was launched last year uses USB-C and no longer has a Lightning Port.
