Attracting Google, Telkomsel Now Has a Substitute for SMS

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Telkomsel and Google announced a collaboration to present Rich Communication Services (RCS) with Rich Business Messaging. This partnership will provide more sophisticated messaging services.

“We want consumers to be able to enjoy the latest and best technology. And this is also what Google does, which promises to give you more than what you need,” said Telkomsel's Director of Planning & Transformation, Wong Soon Nam, Press Conference Telkomsel x Google RCS Strategic Partnership, in Jakarta, Monday (29/1/2024).

RSC allows Telkomsel users to experience using SMS with a higher level of interaction. Apart from sharing quality multimedia content, dynamic group chat, received and read message features, as well as typing indicators.

This technology can also be used by business people through Rich Business Messages (RBM). They can use it according to their needs.

RBM services are available for Telkomsel customers in Indonesia and Singtel in Singapore. Features and various benefits will also be available in the future.

On the same occasion, Director of Android & Business Communication Product Partnerships, International Google, Jason Choy said that this service could support digital transformation in a number of businesses. Apart from that, they can also open up new opportunities in the future.

“We are very excited for this partnership and helping them to launch RBM,” said Choy.

Director General of PPI at the Ministry of Communication and Information, Wayan Toni Supriyanto, explained that RCS is often positioned as the next generation of SMS and MMS. Because these two services do not support several services such as encryption, read receipts, group messages, and have restrictions on sending messages.

“RCS allows users to take advantage of many features that were previously exclusive to today's leading messaging platforms. RCS is routed via a cellular connection or WiFi link, so SMS can later function as a backup. This messaging service is not a replacement or competitor for instant messaging applications,” said Wayan .
