CNBC Insight The Story of a Farmer's Son Becoming World Car 'King', His Wealth IDR 338 T Entrepreneur – 6 days ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Sometimes motivation can come from other people. Other people say something unpleasant so that we are moved to improve ourselves. That's what happened to Ferruccio Lamborghini.

He was belittled by people, then took revenge by building his own business. The business will be successful in defeating the business of people who once underestimated it.

What's the story?

Please note, Ferruccio is a businessman from Italy. His first business was selling tractors in 1946. For him, tractors were not something foreign. As a farmer's son who often played in the fields and rode a tractor, he already knew very well about this machine. As a result, he was able to make the best tractor that could be sold to farmers. He also succeeded in making abundant profits.

Armed with these profits, he then expanded his business in the machine manufacturing sector. This business also made him rich. In fact, he has been named one of the richest people in Italy.

As a rich man, Ferruccio has a hobby of luxury cars. He often buys luxury cars to use or just to display in the garage. However, in 1958 Ferruccio felt something unpleasant when buying a luxury car.

One day, he bought a Ferrari 250 GTO. After leaving the dealership, according to David Jolliffe in Lamborghini: Forty Years (2004), the car was immediately used and it turned out there were problems: the clutch was not good and the engine was noisy.

As a consumer, he clearly complained about this to his boss who happened to know him, namely Enzo Ferrari. Unfortunately, Enzo responded negatively. Instead of fixing the complaint, Enzo belittled Ferruccio.

He said the problem did not come from the Ferrari 250 GT, but because Ferruccio was not good at driving. Moreover, according to Enzo, Ferruccio drives a tractor more often than a sports car. In fact, some versions say that he told Ferruccio to just walk if he didn't like the car he made.

Obviously, hearing words and insults like that, Ferruccio was furious. He went home and chose to repair the Ferrari 250 GT himself. Until finally, the problem was solved.

This success then creates a sense of revenge and self-confidence. He wanted to create his own car factory that could one day beat Ferrari. From here, Automobili Lamborghini was founded in 1962.

Ferruccio's revenge efforts are no joke. Even though he had become a successful and well-known tractor businessman and was rich in wealth, he went downhill at the car factory.

He diverted much of his wealth to making fast, luxury car prototypes. He was also willing to spend a lot of money to bring ex-Ferrari workers to work at Lamborghini. One of those recruited was Giotto Bizzarini, one of the brains behind Ferrari's success.

Until finally it all came to fruition.

In 1963, Automobili Lamborghini succeeded in making a sports car with a 350 GT engine. This machine is successful in driving the car up to 250 km/hour more comfortably and stably. Of course, this achievement succeeded in defeating the Ferrari 250 GT and made Lamborghini popular with many people.

What's even more interesting is that every time Lamborghini releases a new car, it immediately sells out. At this point, Lamborghini is said to have succeeded in competing with Ferrari and is also on par with other competitors, such as Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche and Jaguar.

Unfortunately, Lamborghini's glory days during Ferruccio's leadership era did not last long. In 1973, Ferruccio was hit by financial problems which caused his companies to collapse one by one. This also includes the Automobilio Lamborghini which Ferruccio was forced to release to a new owner.

Even though Ferruccio is no longer owned, Lamborghini is still actively producing cars and is at the top of the sports car industry to this day. Now, quoting Business Chief, Lamborghini has successfully overtaken Ferrari in valuation €20 billion or IDR 338 trillion.

Of course, this success all happened thanks to the annoyance and revenge efforts of someone who was underestimated, Ferrucio Lamborghini.
