Eradicating Online Gambling, There Will Be Raids on Police Officers' Cellphones

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Police officers' cellphones will be raided in order to eradicate online gambling. Police officers who are caught playing online gambling will be given strict sanctions.

Metro Jaya Police Chief Karyoto stated that his party would follow up on the directions of President Jokowi and National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo regarding the prevention of online gambling. In fact, he was ready to check the cell phones of police officers.

“We are also in control of cell phone raids,” Karyoto told reporters in Depok, as quoted Second, Tuesday (25/6/2024). “And (if) we get that, we will impose sanctions, clear national sanctions.”

Karyoto said that Polda Metro Jaya would carry out education for the public and internally to prevent online gambling.

“Indeed, nationally it is clear that the actions of the President, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, the Minister of Communication and Information are trying to eradicate it and we too. There are many people who are responsible for this, no matter which community, many are involved,” said Karyoto.

He hopes that the public, especially parents, will more closely monitor the activities of children and teenagers in using electronic devices such as cellphones and laptops.

He believes that online gambling can be eradicated even if online bookies are located abroad. “The most important thing is education to the public. Even if the bookie is from abroad, if no one in the public puts it up, it's online gambling,” said Karyoto.

Previously, the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) announced the termination of internet lines suspected of being closely linked to online gambling, especially from and to Cambodia and Davao City in the Philippines.

This policy is contained in decision letter number B-1678/M.KOMINFO/PI.02.02/06/2024 dated 21 June 2024 which is intended for telecommunications service providers of internet access gateway services (Network Access Point/NAP).

This decision letter follows up on the results of the Online Gambling Eradication Task Force (Satgas) meeting on June 19 which was chaired by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.

There are three requests from Kominfo addressed to NAPs as follows:

  1. Terminate access to internet communication lines that are suspected of being used for online gambling, especially to and from Cambodia and Davao, Philippines within 3X24 hours (working days) of this letter being signed.
  2. The period for terminating access will be evaluated to be immediately restored if the situation is conducive
  3. Report termination steps and the results of their implementation for evaluation and follow-up.
