Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Foldable screen cellphones are increasingly in demand, as many cellphone vendors launch these products. The trend shows significant growth with a 49% increase in the first quarter (Q1) 2024 in the global market year-on-year.
This was revealed by the latest report by research firm Counterpoint. However, it turns out that it wasn't Samsung that took first place.
Samsung, which has consistently launched a portfolio of foldable screen cellphones before it became as popular as it is now, must be willing to be replaced by Huawei.
Counteroint noted that the growth of folding screen cellphones was driven by manufacturers from China, especially Huawei, which for the first time managed to beat Samsung.
The Huawei Mate X5, which was launched at the end of 2023, is the first book model foldable cellphone launched by the Chinese giant. This cellphone immediately attracted public interest and became the best-selling folding screen device in China for three consecutive quarters.
Furthermore, this year Huawei launched the Pocket 2 which is the manufacturer's first clamshell model 5G folding screen cellphone and significantly boosted sales in Q1 2024.
“Huawei is very proud of our track record of innovation in folding screen technology. We will continue to lead the folding screen cellphone industry by bringing amazing experiences to the global market,” said a Huawei spokesperson, quoted from TheRegister, Tuesday (4/6/2024).
Counterpoint noted that book-style foldable screen cellphones contributed to 55% of the foldable phone market share in Q1 2024 for the first time.
Previously, clamshell model folding screen cellphones were much more popular since 2021 when Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip 3 series.
Chinese cellphone manufacturers such as Huawei, Honor, OnePlus and Vivo have been releasing folding screen cellphones with book models since the second half of last year.
On the other hand, Samsung's clamshell folding screen cellphone is said to be starting to slow down, according to a Counterpoint report.
However, so far Huawei is still focused on working on the folding screen cellphone market in China. The reason is, this country is the largest cellphone market in the world.
On the other hand, manufacturers such as Honor and Motorola are already intensively working on other countries.
