Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The founder of the dating app Bumble, Whitney Wolfe Herd predicts that artificial intelligence (AI) will drastically change dating styles and crushes. AI will act as a human replacement for the “approach” and “first date” in the search for a soul mate.
Herd believes in the future that AI could be used as a “dating assistant” for its users. One user's AI will “chat” with another user's AI to find suitable potential partners for each other.
“You can, in the not too distant future, talk to an AI dating assistant. You can express your fears. After that, your AI assistant will be the one dating another AI assistant,” he said at the Bloomberg Technology Summit as quoted by Futurism.
Herd has given up his position as CEO at Bumble since 2023. However, he still has a role at the dating application company.
The audience laughed at Herd's prediction. However, he stated that his vision of “AI dating” is not far-fetched.
“This is true. You no longer have to talk to 600 people. [AI] can explore all of San Francisco in your place and then choose three people for you to meet. “That's the power of AI used appropriately,” Herd said.
The concept of a “dating assistant” has been used by a programmer named Aleksandr Zhadan who lives in Moksow, Russia. It uses OpenAI's large GPT language model to talk to 5,000 women at once.
The tactic was a success. Zhadan managed to find his soul mate through this strategy. However, many women also felt offended because it turned out they were only talking to AI.
Currently, AI chatbots are not sophisticated enough to imitate human traits and behavior, let alone flirt with other AI.
Bumble has now just used AI to send messages specifically designed for its users through a feature called “Opening Move” or conversation starter.
Through this feature, Bumble users don't need to write themselves chat their first time on a dating app.
