Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Claudia Sheinbaum was elected as Mexico's first female president, winning at least 58.3% of the vote, according to a quick tally by the country's election commission.

His closest rival, Xochitl Galvez, from the opposition coalition, received at least 26.6% of the vote, while Jorge Alvarez Maynez, a candidate from the centrist Movimiento Ciudadano party, came in third with at least 9.9%.

Sheinbaum's results exceed the 54.71% achieved by his populist mentor, outgoing president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, in 2018.

He said Galvez and Maynez had called him to acknowledge his victory.

“We envision a Mexico that is diverse, diverse and democratic. Our duty is and will always be to look after every Mexican, without distinction,” said Sheinbaum, as reported by The GuardianMonday (3/6/2024).

“Even though many Mexicans do not fully agree with our project, we must move forward in peace and harmony to continue building a just and more prosperous Mexico.”

“I want to thank the people of Mexico for their recognition of our history, results, beliefs and will, and most importantly for their recognition of our national project. I am also grateful that for the first time in the 200 years of this republic, I will be a woman president Mexico's first.”

The snap count was postponed several times without explanation from the election commission, causing Galvez to doubt its veracity, despite large gaps in the polls.

“The voice is there. We must not let them hide it,” Galvez wrote in X.
