Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A person's life is very dynamic. From being an ordinary man, then becoming an impromptu billionaire, to becoming a garbage man. This is what happened to Michael Carroll, a man from England.
Carroll was originally an ordinary man. It's just that in 2002 he won a lottery worth £9.7 million or Rp. 223 billion which turned him into an instant billionaire. Unfortunately, he wasted that much money until he went bankrupt and became a trash collector.
What's the story?
The story begins in 2002. At that time, Carroll, who worked as a biscuit packer, took part in the lottery draw. Unexpectedly good luck followed him. Carroll won the lottery with a value of £9.7 million or Rp. 223 billion.
Since then, his life has changed. From being just an ordinary employee earning IDR 3 million per week, he turned into a billionaire. Unfortunately, this change was not accompanied by a wise attitude in managing money. He, who was confused about getting that much money, chose to waste the money.
Indeed, he is recorded as also allocating money to invest. He is recorded as having invested £1.5 million in sports clubs in England. However, the investment allocation is still less than the expenditure to support a consumer lifestyle.
Quote The Independent, Not long after getting the 'windfall', Carroll, who was still 19 years old at that time, immediately diverted the majority of the money to non-productive activities.
It is known that he spends £1 million or the equivalent of IDR 20 billion just to buy drugs. Then, buy luxury cars Rolls-Royce, Range Rover, BMW and Mercedes Benz with a nominal value of billions of rupiah. Not only that, he also admitted to spending as much as prize money £2,000 or Rp. 40 million a day to buy cigarettes.
This all doesn't take into account the other luxurious lifestyle he adopts, such as often throwing super luxurious parties, buying luxury goods, luxurious houses, expensive dogs, and often hiring sex workers.
In fact, it is not uncommon for these items to be damaged for no apparent reason. He was recorded as having driven a luxury car and then crashed into a resident's house. This lifestyle makes him have to deal with the law.
Two years after becoming an instant billionaire BBC International reported he was addicted to cocaine and had to go to jail. Apart from that, in 2006 he again had to go to prison because he often caused trouble which disturbed residents. At this point, it was reported that his wealth had declined drastically.
With assets of hundreds of billions, Carroll should be able to live without having to work. Unfortunately, the money only lasted 8 years. In 2010, he admitted that his fortune from the lottery had simply run out due to his reckless lifestyle. He also turned to being a scavenger in England to cover his daily expenses.
Until finally, Carroll's glory as a billionaire completely disappeared in 2013. At that time, he declared himself bankrupt and all his assets were lost. He also doesn't have a home and lives wandering.
In the report The MirrorSince 2019, Carroll has moved to Scotland and works as a coal carrier. Returning to being an ordinary person didn't make him regret it at all.
“I live a good and free lifestyle now. I am happier because I have my life back,” he told The Mirrorquoted Monday (13/5/2024).
