Jeff Bezos has unlimited assets, but still uses a battered table

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Amazon founder Jeff Bezos apparently still uses the same work desk for decades. In fact, Bezos is a trillionaire who can buy a new table whenever he wants.

Quoting from a personal Instagram account upload, Jeff Bezos' fiancee, Lauren Sanchez, revealed that the big Amazon boss still uses the same table from the 90s. As evidence, Sanchez also uploaded an old photo of Bezos using the same table.

“I'm happy that he still works from one of the first desks that has been there from the start (see next slide). This is where hours of hard work become the highlight of the first day,” wrote Sanchez via his Instagram (@laurenwsanchez), quoted Tuesday (30/ 1/2024).

In the black and white photo on the first slide, Bezos is seen sitting in a chair with a laptop on his old table. Meanwhile, in the second photo, the businessman from the United States (US) is seen working while standing at the same table.

Quoting from CNBC Make It, the table is a door that is “transformed” into a work table by adding legs. Not without reason, this is a way for Bezos to save money.

“Bezos saw tables and doors being sold at Home Depot. The price of the doors was much cheaper than the tables, making Bezos decide to buy a door and install some legs,” said the fifth Amazon employee, Nico Lovejoy.

Meanwhile, the 60-year-old Bezos said that “turning” a door into a table was a symbol of using money wisely.

“This is a symbol of spending money on things that are important to customers and not spending money on things that are not important,” stressed Bezs.

Until now, an Amazon spokesperson revealed that the upgraded version of the door desk is still used by Amazon employees. Additionally, frugality remains a key tenet of Amazon's leadership.

For your information, Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 and launched it on July 16, 1995. At first, Amazon.com only sold books online. Since 2005, Amazon began offering various products, such as electronic devices, clothing, and other necessities.

Entering 2006, Amazon launched a video-on-demand service initially known as Amazon Unbox on TiVo. However, it eventually changed its name to Amazon Instant Video.

In late 2007, Amazon released a reading device, the Kindle. Kindle allows customers to purchase, download, read and save a wide selection of books.

Last July 2021, Bezos stepped down as CEO and chose to become executive chairman of Amazon.

According to a Forbes report, Bezos will be the third richest person in the world in 2024, just behind Elon Musk and Bernard Arnault and their family with a total net worth of US$183.4 billion or around IDR 2,894 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 15,784/US$).
