Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Joe Biden's administration plans to require US cloud companies to identify foreign entities that can access their data centers. This plan is to prevent other countries, for example China, from training AI models with US technology.
“We can't let China or people we don't want access to our cloud to train their AI models,” said US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo in an interview with Reuters, quoted Monday (29/1/2024).
“We have also imposed export controls on chips,” he added.
The Biden administration is taking a series of steps to prevent China from using US technology for AI. Because this growing sector raises security concerns.
The proposed “know your customer” regulations were released last weekend for public inspection and will be published today, Monday (29/1) local time.
“This is a big deal,” Raimondo said.
The United States is doing its best to deny China the computing power to train its own AI models.
“But what's the point if they get around this by using our cloud to train their models?” he said.
Last month, Raimondo revealed the Commerce Department would not allow Nvidia, opening a new chapter for shipping the most advanced AI chips and highest processing power. Where the chip allows China to train their advanced AI models.
