Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Cable internet giant Comcast is partnering with satellite-based internet service Starlink, which Elon Musk's company will provide connectivity to business customers in areas with limited internet access.
The collaboration between two United States (US) companies is said to be Reuters so the first of the network operators and satellite-based service providers to provide connectivity, quoted Monday (24/6/2024).
This is Starlink's latest move to expand its business. Previously, the company had also worked with operator T-Mobile.
The partnership aims to provide satellite-based telecommunications connections to customers in locations without cellular access.
Reuters also wrote that the collaboration with Comcast further strengthens Starlink's position over its competitors. Other names that also play in satellite-based communication networks include Amazon, Kuiper, and Viasat.
Starlink is the largest communications satellite constellation. Using Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) technology, the service provider is now the largest.
The service provides internet connection for both individual and business customers, but mostly for those in areas with limited internet access.
Starlink itself has served a number of countries. However, it has not been widely used by the public, not even reaching 1% compared to internet users in each country.
In the United States, since its launch in 2020, it has only been used by 1.2 million. That number is only 0.39 percent of internet user penetration in the US.
The largest number is only obtained from New Zealand. Since its launch in 2021, there have been 40 thousand users or 0.8 percent of internet penetration in the country.
