Poor Man Takes Revenge of Rejection of Marriage, Has Rp. 2 T in Gold

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Love problems often make someone overwhelmed with sadness. Especially if someone expresses love, but is rejected by the person concerned simply because of economic factors. The pain can certainly be felt.

That's what happened to Samuel Bellamy, a man born February 23, 1689. At the age ripe enough for marriage, namely 26 years, Bellamy declared his love and wanted to marry a woman named Maria Hallet.

Unfortunately, this wish was rejected outright by Maria's family, who were the landowners. The reason is because Bellamy is still too poor to propose to other people's children. At that time, Bellamy was just a poor sailor. His status on the ship was only a “lowly employee” which did not allow him to become rich.

Hearing this answer, Bellamy's heart was immediately touched. He did not accept this rejection and took revenge to get rich so he could marry Maria.

What's the story?

Pirate

As explained by Colin Woodard in The Republic of Pirates: Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribbean Pirates and the Man Who Brought Them Down (2007), after this incident Bellamy was determined to become a rich sailor.

The way to do this is by having the courage to search for treasures throughout the world's oceans. He first went hunting in 1716 to the Florida Peninsula. At that time, he heard news that a Spanish ship carrying treasure had sunk. It contained tens of kilograms of gold and silver.

By inviting a gold craftsman, Palgraves William, he sailed from Massachusetts even though the risk was great because he was also dealing with other treasure hunters.

However, the treasure hunt in Florida did not go smoothly. They only got a few gold and silver pieces. Meanwhile, he couldn't find the treasure chests he was looking for, which made him change his profession to become a pirate. The feeling of resentment resulting from being rejected by a woman for marriage then made him enthusiastic about pursuing this profession. He built a team of skilled people.

So, after that, Bellamy's life story was like the movie “Pirates of the Caribian”. Every day Bellamy lives at sea looking for defenseless ships to rob. Of course he put up a black flag complete with a skull. Typical characteristics of a pirate.

Bellamy's work location is usually in the Bay of Honduras. There is a global trade route. Bellamy devoured many small ships. However, not all robbery attempts go smoothly. There were times when Bellamy's ship was actually robbed.

On the official site Whyndah Museum, Bellamy's biggest robbery occurred in 1717. At that time he robbed the British ship, Whyndah. The ship contained African slaves and of course thousands of kilograms of gold, diamonds and silver. He then seized the Whyndah ship and raised his flag.

In the end, it all slowly turned the poor sailor into a rich man. He was known as the ruler of the seas and began to be feared. At this point, Forbes (2008) ranked Bellamy as the richest pirate in history.

Thanks to his efforts to succeed at sea and his success in robbing tons of gold from ships, he has wealth reaching US$ 120 million or the equivalent of Rp. 2 trillion. With such large assets, Bellamy's dream has come true: to become rich. This means that he will marry his sweetheart, Maria, again.

Die young

Bellamy sailed to Massachusetts on April 26, 1717 to meet Mary. Unfortunately, the journey this time was not smooth. The sailing ship he commanded was hit by a fierce storm. Slowly, the ship sank along with 140 crew members and treasure chests. Bellamy was declared dead by drowning at a very young age, namely 28 years.

Thus, Bellamy's revenge efforts were incomplete. The struggle to become rich with great difficulty was forced to end in an instant at sea. Plus, he can't marry the love of his life who once rejected him.

On land, Maria Hallet waited for news for a long time. Various sources say that Maria decided to marry another man who proposed to her first. In the end, Maria and Bellamy are no longer together.
