Sandiaga Reveals Plans to Collect Tourism Funds from Airplane Tickets

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf), Sandiaga Uno admitted that the government is planning to hold a meeting regarding the discourse on levying tourism funds via plane tickets. However, Sandi asked the public not to worry about the results of the upcoming meeting. Because, until now there has been no decision regarding this levy.

“Indeed, there was a coordination meeting to discuss sustainable tourism funding plans,” said Sandi at the online media meeting 'The Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno', Monday (22/4/2024).

“As of today, don't worry, we won't burden the public with even more expensive ticket prices,” he continued.

Sandi promised not to burden the public by charging higher ticket prices in order to collect funds for sustainable tourism. Moreover, he often received feedback about domestic flight ticket prices being more expensive than international ones.

In this regard, Sandi said that the tourism fund levy was still in the process of being studied before it was decided to implement it. Apart from that, his party is also providing a number of options.

“Of course we are aware of input from the public that ticket prices are still expensive. We will not increase the burden, but we are reviewing several options for collecting tourism funds,” explained Sandi.

“There has been no decision yet. So, please be patient. Of course there is no amount or consideration yet. This is still in the discussion and deliberation stage,” he stressed.

If this levy of funds via plane tickets is implemented, Sandi promises to provide the widest possible transparency for the public, namely through periodic reports.

“Of course it must be very transparent because now is an era full of the need for transparency as well full disclosure,” said Sandi.

“So, these funds will also be managed in a fully transparent manner and we will be obliged to do so reports (report). “We will ensure that we will not burden passengers because ticket rates are considered very expensive,” he continued.

Regarding tourism funds, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy emphasized that the plan launched by the government is an endowment fund for tourism purposes, namely tourism marketing, organizing quality and sustainable events on an international scale, as well as promotions.

Regarding the initial source, sustainable tourism funds will be taken from the government budget.

“We are still reviewing the source of the funds comprehensively. Of course, initially it will come from the government budget and form it, like an endowment fund,” explained Sandi.
