Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Informatics is a field of science that is currently trending, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing this, Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya (UKWMS) decided to establish an Informatics Study Program under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering (FT).

UKWMS Informatics learning has 2 concentrations, namely data science using artificial intelligence (AI) and software engineering. Artificial intelligence (AI) is needed to be able to retrieve and process large data floating around the internet. With AI, this data can be collected as needed and produce new knowledge.

Meanwhile, “Software engineering studies how we create programs that suit the company's business processes so that it can improve the quality, efficiency and rescalability of the company's software. So that it can suit the company's development.” This was explained by Philipus Suryo Subandoro, S.Kom., M.Kom. as Head of the Data and Information Center and lecturer at UKWMS Informatics.

Furthermore, Philipus explained that AI performance is based on the data collected. So it can be affected by biases held by data providers. “For this reason, at UKWMS Informatics it is important for us to provide parameters that can help produce safer AI.” For example, by innovating to create a detector that is able to differentiate between human works of art and artificial intelligence.

Informatics lectures will be held regularly at the UKWMS Kalijudan Campus. To be precise, at FT UKWMS, there is a computer laboratory with the latest specifications to support lecture activities. Apart from that, UKWMS has also prepared collaboration with various parties from within and outside the country so that the quality of its graduates is guaranteed.

The joining of experts who master the field of informatics and are directly involved in the education process at UKWMS, is expected to make the campus community increasingly advanced in terms of technology applications. In turn, graduates can also become contributors who empower Indonesian society. Especially in terms of developing and utilizing information technology in various fields of life. (VW)
