Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that in April 2024, there would be 1,066,958 foreign tourists visiting Indonesia. That figure rose 2.41% monthly, and jumped 23.23% annually.
Cumulatively in January-April 2024, there were 4,098,714 foreign tourists visiting Indonesia, an increase of 24.85% compared to the same period in 2023.
“For information, the total number of foreign tourist visits in the first quarter of 2024 is the highest in the last 4 years, namely since 2020,” said Acting Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti during a press conference, Monday (3/6/2024).
BPS data shows that throughout 2019, a total of 16,106,954 foreign tourists visited Indonesia. A total of 5,031,873 foreign tourists entered Indonesia in the January-April 2019 period.
After 2019, or when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia dropped drastically.
In the January-April 2020 period, only 2,807,397 foreign tourists visited Indonesia, out of a total of 4,052,923 foreign tourists throughout 2020.
In January-April 2021, this figure dropped again to only 465,038 foreign tourists, then in the same period in 2022 there was an increase to 642,512 foreign tourists, then in January-April 2023 it started to jump to 3,282,950 foreign tourists.
And, in the first 4 months of this year, the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia soared, closing the gap compared to 2019 or before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Then what about the expenses of foreign tourists visiting RI?
“The spending pattern of foreign tourists while visiting Indonesia, in the first quarter of 2024, the proportion of foreign tourists spending is for accommodation costs which is 37.85%, followed by spending on food and drink at 20.60% and the proportion for shopping and souvenirs at 12.67% ,” explained Amalia.
“The average expenditure of foreign tourists per visit is US$1,429,” he continued.
BPS recorded developments in the average expenditure of foreign tourists per visit throughout the 2020-2024 period. It is observed that expenditure in 2021 is the highest and there is a downward trend.
In 2020, the average foreign tourist expenditure per visit was US$2,165, then in 2021 it jumped to US$3,097.41, in 2022 it fell to US$1,448.01, and in 2023 it fell to US$1,625.36. The data is for the first quarter period of 2020-2024, respectively, the 2024 figures are preliminary figures.
From the proportion of foreign tourists spending, there can be seen a change.
In 2023, the portion for accommodation will reach 41.65%, followed by food and drink at 21.49%, and for shopping and souvenirs around 12.93%.
“Most of the expenses of foreign tourists are allocated to accommodation costs,” said Amalia.
Apart from these 3 expenditure items, foreign tourists also spend money in Indonesia for entertainment, local transportation, local tour packages, domestic flights, vehicle rental, health and beauty, training costs, and other costs.
