Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The coach of the Indonesian national team (Timnas), Shin Tae-yong, is still a hot topic of conversation in his home country, South Korea. The public spotlight on the man nicknamed STY is none other than the coach's success in bringing victory for the Indonesian U-23 national team over South Korea in the quarter-finals of the U-23 Asian Cup at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Doha, Qatar, Friday (26/4/2024 ).
This match was more than two weeks ago, but according to the Manager of Global Strategy Team at Yonhap News Agency, Hwang Sun-ik, Shin Tae-yong is still a hot topic in a number of South Korean media.
“One of the hot issues is around sports. You definitely know Coach Shin,” he said, when receiving a delegation of a number of journalists from Indonesia at his office, Monday (14/5/2024). The meeting with Hwang was part of the 'Indonesia Next Generation Journalist Network on Korea' program series, a collaboration between the Korea Foundation and the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI).
The topic of Shin Tae-yong also came up during a meeting with South Korean DPR member Kim Gi-Hyeon. According to him, since Korea's defeat to Indonesia, which prevented them from qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics, many people have criticized the Korean national team coach. Even so, there were no negative comments addressed to Shin Tae-yong.
Not to forget, Kim also congratulated the Indonesian people on their success in making new history at the Asian Cup.
“I am very happy to congratulate you and Shin Tae-yong on the victory, although if the Korean people knew I said this, they would not be too happy,” said Kim, who is also chairman of the People's Power Party.
